Ambala Railway Station
Ambala is a city in the state of Haryana which lies in the borderline between the states of Haryana and Punjab. Its strategic location also makes it a passing point for travelers going to places in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh. The main points of connection of this city and the nearby cantonment area is by road or railways. While the GT road or National Highway No. 1 connects this city with Delhi and Chandigarh as well as nearby cities in Haryana like Panipat, Kurukshetra and Karnal, the railways connect this city with other parts of India as well.
Ambala railways are a part of the Northern Railways and there are three railway stations by which this city can be accessed. They are the Ambala Cantt railway station, the Ambala city railway station as well as the Dhulkot railway station.
While the Ambala Cantt. Railway station is the biggest railway station on the Delhi-Amritsar-Meerut-Kalka lines, Ambala city railway station lies on the Amritsar/Jammu line while the Dhulkot railway station lies on the Ambala-Chandigarh/Kalka line of travel in the Northern Railways.
Ambala division is of strategic importance to the Northern Railway and it was created in the year 1987. It serves the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and the union territory of Chandigarh. The capitals of the three states, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh fall on this prestigious division.
The Ambala division contains 129 stations, 2862 bridges as well as 102 tunnels. The Kalka Shimla railway line is the most popular line of this division which has become a heritage site as inscribed by UNESCO. This line has outstanding panoramic views of the majestic Himalayas and touches several popular tourist points such as Dharampur, Taradevi, Solan, Barog and of course, Shimla.
The majority of railway traffic in this division is based on freight trains. The division covers one of the most prosperous places in north India and this is reflected in the healthy outbound as well as inbound traffic related to agriculture and industries. In equal measure, there is freight handling food grains as well as inbound railway traffic carrying raw materials for the various industries such as cement, steel, coal, fertilizers and so forth.
The Ambala Cantt. railway station sees the majority of passenger traffic since the rail lines going to Kalka, Shimla, Chandigarh fall on this route. The various stations in the Ambala division have several computerized ticket booking centres. There are ongoing efforts for modernization of the important stations in this division and many infrastructure facilities have been uplifted in the Ambala city and Ambala Cantt. railway stations.
